Pamukkale — "cotton castle" — is a hillside of calcite terraces built up by mineral water over thousands of years. You walk it barefoot, which is part of why it stays in the memory.
Above the terraces sits Hierapolis: a Roman spa city with a theatre, a colonnaded street and one of the largest ancient necropoleis in Anatolia. The two are visited as one site.
